Harry & Bess

This effect is based on the “Metamorphosis” illusion made famous by Harry and Bess Houdini.

The Effect:

The King of Spades represents Harry Houdini. The Queen of Hearts represents Bess. Both cards have a hole through the center. Bess is placed in a card case “trunk.” She is then bound inside by threading a rope through the hole. The trunk is then secured with “chains” (actually rubber bands) all around. Harry stands on top of the trunk, which is covered momentarily with a curtain. When it is removed, Bess (freed from her bonds) now stands where Harry was only a moment before. The trunk is opened and Harry is found inside. The rope is threaded through the hole in the middle of the card!

Disclaimer: This effect requires a custom-made gaff card. Instructions are provided for making a simple and inexpensive version. However, knowledge of and experience in card-splitting and/or other techniques for creating/printing custom-made gaff cards are recommended if a professional quality card is desired.
